A recipe for friendship: mixing conversations and cake

When doctor Katie moved from Tamworth to Newcastle to study eight years ago, she looked for ways to engage with the local community. Having never lived in a city before, she was missing her family and feeling a long way from home.

Growing up, Katie had a special bond with her nanna which fostered a love of older people and an appreciation for their rich life experiences. When Katie discovered HammondCare’s volunteer program, she knew this would be the perfect way to fill the empty space in her life.

Since becoming a volunteer in 2015, Katie has formed a wonderful friendship with Hazel who she visits every Sunday afternoon. Their ‘cuppa and chat’ visits are a weekly highlight, during which time the pair enjoy learning about each other’s lives. “Over the years Hazel’s told me all about the buildings in Newcastle and the local community’s past. She knows a lot about me too! She always asks about my family and how my job is going. She’s interested in everything that’s going on”.

Recently Katie was invited to attend a garden party for Hazel’s 100th birthday, organised by Hazel’s loved ones. Being a long-time hobby baker, she was thrilled to have the opportunity to express her care for Hazel in the form of a beautiful, handmade birthday cake.

Volunteer Coordinator Ruth checks in regularly to see how Katie is going with her weekly visits. “The two of them have a wonderful close bond and a friendship that has lasted the test of time,” she said.

HammondCare’s volunteer program is available to people living in our residential care homes and can make a meaningful difference to people with complex healthcare needs. If you feel a volunteer might be of benefit to your loved one living in residential care, speak to your Residential Manager for more information.
