Looking after older people has always been close to Krishna’s heart. When he joined our Cardiff team as a Specialised Dementia Carer, his dedication was immediately clear.
Growing up, I looked after my grandparents while my parents were busy working. They spent most of their lives looking after us – for me it feels natural to give back.’
Krishna is grateful for the training offered to him at HammondCare, which has boosted his confidence and communication skills.
Here is his story:
When passion and potential meet
When Krishna joined HammondCare he was already part way through a Certificate III in Ageing Support. Whilst it was clear he had a lot of experience in caring for older people, he was naturally shy.
Workplace Coach Larney recognised Krishna’s potential, and worked with him one on one to build his confidence and skills. Everything from supporting him across cooking and cleaning tasks, to computer skills and communication with family members and the wider HammondCare team – and Krishna’s confidence steadily grew.
‘His skills are now exceptional, and he has taken the further initiative to improve his English independently,’ adds Residential Manager Laiju.
A strong foundation is key
With a strong foundation now in place, Krishna could further develop his professional skills, completing his training in medication administration.
‘I remember the day he found out he’d successfully completed the training – he was beaming!’ shares Laiju.
‘Krishna’s story is an example of the value of on-the-job support. It shows what’s possible when we invest in someone who brings the right attitude. It also reflects our commitment to our team members for opportunities to grow.’
Finding joy and fulfillment in the simple moments
Krishna is quick to acknowledge the opportunities he’s been given, and the encouragement of his team members. ‘It really motivates me to give my best every day.
‘I sat with a resident recently who was having a challenging day. Holding her hand, I gently spoke with her about the things that brought her joy: her garden, her cat, fond childhood memories. She smiled and thanked me for being there for her.
‘It’s these simple moments that remind me why I enjoy coming to work. Each day brings an opportunity to make someone’s day that little bit brighter. It’s very rewarding.’
