HammondCare Darlinghurst will be a purpose-built, 42-bed residential aged care home for the elderly who are homeless, or at risk of homelessness, with high care needs.

The home will help fill a gap in existing services by providing permanent accommodation and high-level health care to the homeless in the area it is needed most – inner Metropolitan Sydney.

HammondCare is committed to addressing this need. Our mission is to improve the quality of life of people in need, and to provide our services to anyone who needs them, irrespective of their background or financial status.

Homelessness statistics

The latest Census data, published in early 2018, revealed that over 18,000 elderly women and men across Australia are without a place to call home. These older members of our community are falling between the cracks for a variety of reasons, including a lack of affordable accommodation, chronic health issues, unemployment, domestic violence, and marriage breakdown.

Sydney’s Darlinghurst is part of an area with the highest concentration in Australia of older people who are homeless. Inner Sydney now has close to 800 people in this category. Research indicates a growing number of people experience homelessness later in life, and there is an increasing incidence of homelessness amongst older women.

This new data serves to underline the growing seriousness of this problem, and the worsening situation for older people at risk of homelessness.
