We first heard about team member Sean’s compassion and exceptional talent when he was nominated for a Mission in Action Award.
During his seven years with HammondCare, Sean has made many special connections with the people he supports, including Home Care client Nigel* who lives alone with his adored six cats.
Giving is second nature to Sean – he often takes Nigel a sandwich on his visits. And as a token of their friendship, he recently drew an artwork keepsake featuring animals, Nigel’s favourite subject.
Sean shares his motivation for caring for people as if they are family.
Feeling valued
When I applied for the Specialised Carer role at HammondCare, I had no prior experience with supporting people at home. I’m an electrical fitter by trade and was looking for a role where I could give back in some way. I’m grateful to my then manager Rahni and her team for believing in me, for giving me a go.
I can honestly say I love helping people, so they can keep enjoying living in their own home. It’s where they want to be, and where they belong, surrounded by the things they love doing.
Drawing for Nigel
I know that Nigel loves animals; in my spare time I draw and sell my art. I’ve sold some of my work on social media and even had my own exhibition. I came across a cute photograph of a corgi and a cat, which I decided to draw for him. Drawing for people is an expression of my care.
I enjoyed art at school and even considered art college at one stage. I didn’t pick up drawing again until nine years ago. It’s very relaxing, and part of my self-care routine – a way to wind down.
When I presented Nigel with the print he shed tears of happiness, which said a lot more than any words. Over the time I have known him, he’s faced many challenges. To see him happy was a special and memorable moment.
Sharing the care
Nigel doesn’t have any family support. Fortunately he has caring neighbours. We work together as a community to help keep him safe at home.
Practical support
I’m always looking for more ways to support clients I care for. Nigel buys lots of tinned cat food when we go shopping, so I arranged for the purchase of a shopping trolley to make the trips a bit easier. He also likes to spend a lot of time on his verandah. It can get a bit wet and slippery – he had a fall not long ago, and damaged his knee. I suggested we purchase a non-slip mat. I then did some research and shared the results with the Home Care team. This simple purchase means Nigel can keep doing the things he enjoys.
