Carrying the heart of Greenwich forward

For more than 60 years, Greenwich Hospital has been a special place of care for patients, families and team members, defined by kindness, dignity and respect.

In March, current and former teams, volunteers, board members and supporters gathered to reflect on the hospital's legacy and celebrate the people who shaped its story.

Among those attending was Greenwich Hospital’s Consumer Advisory Board member Scott Bunny, who has been connected to Greenwich for more than a decade and whose family experienced firsthand the impact of care delivered there.

Both of Scott's parents, Malcolm and Angela, received care at Greenwich in the final weeks of their lives.

‘What the teams and this place did once we came out of that pressured hospital environment was create a calm place for us to spend time with Dad,’ Scott said.

‘Nothing was too difficult.’

He recalls being encouraged to bring the family dog to visit, spending time outdoors with his father. When Angela was admitted several years later, Scott and his family again found support in HammondCare's unique approach to care.

‘I couldn't have created a better environment to spent time and share precious moments,’ he said.

For Executive General Manager Healthcare and Hospitals Felicity Burns, Scott's experience reflects what has always made Greenwich special.

‘What stands out for me is the advocacy and the passion. I see it every day. It is about seeing the person in front of you,’ Felicity said.

‘Care is not delivered to people. It’s built with the person and those who love and support them.’

As HammondCare looks towards the redevelopment of the Greenwich site and the creation of a new Centre of Excellence for complex care, Felicity knows the legacy of Greenwich is not tied to a building.

‘We take that care with us wherever we are, and we will return to a place that better meets the needs of our teams and the people we care for.’

To remember their time at Greenwich, team members wrote on the hospital walls, sharing stories, poems and memories - a visible reminder of what this place has meant to so many.
