Dementia clinical trials

Our clinical trials focus on two key areas: testing the effectiveness of medication for Alzheimer's disease and dementia, and treatments for symptoms in palliative care.

Dementia clinical trials

Our clinical trials focus on two key areas: testing the effectiveness of medication for Alzheimer's disease and dementia, and treatments for symptoms in palliative care.

Why take part in a clinical trial?

  • Are you concerned about your memory or the memory of a loved one?
  • Have you been diagnosed with mild cognitive impairment, dementia, Alzheimer's disease or a life-limiting illness?

If you answered 'yes' to either of these questions, you may be interested in participating in a clinical trial.

Taking part in a clinical trial gives you early access to new treatments in Alzheimer's disease, dementia and palliative care.

Some trials look at how people respond to a new treatment and what side effects might occur. This helps to determine if a new treatment works, is safe, and is better than those already available.

Clinical trials help advance the future of care

There are a number of benefits, including:

  • Access to treatments that are not currently available, under the close observation of experts
  • Learning more about managing your condition with ongoing monitoring and support
  • Improved health and wellbeing outcomes

By taking part in a clinical trial, you contribute to research and help us find breakthrough treatments for Alzheimer’s disease and dementia, and the symptoms of life-limiting illnesses. For example, HammondCare took part in the lecanemab clinical trial, the first successful Alzheimer's disease treatment trial in 20 years, as well as the groundbreaking donanemab clinical trial.

Advancing evidence in dementia and palliative care

HammondCare supports clinical trials through The Dementia Centre and The Palliative Centre.

The Dementia Centre

The Dementia Centre conducts industry-sponsored clinical trials that aim to improve outcomes for people living with dementia. Led by a team of sector-recognised professionals, we connect with trial sponsors and researchers worldwide in the shared pursuit of advancing care.

We host a range of sponsored trials of new, potentially disease-modifying medications for the treatment of Alzheimer’s disease and other dementias and illnesses. These activities provide hope for participants and families and also help carers feel supported in their roles.

Our dementia clinical trials are based at Level 1, 322 Glenferrie Road Malvern, VIC 3144.

The Palliative Centre

As part of its palliative and end-of-life research, The Palliative Centre conducts clinical trials to improve quality of life and wellbeing for people living with life-limiting illness.

Clinical trials are often conducted through and based at our hospital services. This includes initiating our own studies, alongside collaboration and co-design with groups such as the Palliative Care Clinical Studies Collaborative (PaCCSC) and the Cancer Symptoms Trial group.
