HammondCare Horsley is a residential aged care home specialising in dementia care, made up of small domestic cottages built for independence and familiarity.

A care environment that looks, feels and operates like a home

We believe that the best place for people with dementia to be is at home. When this is no longer possible, then our commitment is to provide an aged care environment that looks, feels and operates like a home.

Research shows people living with dementia are most comfortable in small, domestic environments. Our cottages are designed to feel as little like an institution as possible, and give residents an opportunity to engage with the rhythms and routines of normal home life.

Residents are encouraged to live and operate in the cottage as they would in a home; the resident is free to spend time in any of the common areas, and the buildings are designed so each choice is a ‘right’ one. This means there are no dead-ends and any locked doors are unobtrusive. There are many visual ‘cues’ about where one is, and where one is heading. To minimise confusion, the central kitchen and living areas are always visible from corridors or other spaces.

Our Horsley aged care home has been designed using internationally recognised principles to promote choice, minimise confusion and maximise independence for people living with dementia.

Quality food served in home-cooked meals

HammondCare is committed to an excellent food culture, with all food served fresh and prepared by residents and staff in our kitchens. Food preparation and planning is overseen by our Executive Chef and nutritionists, who ensure all the residents’ nutritional needs and tastes are catered to, and that varied, fresh and delicious food is available every day.

The model of having a domestic kitchen at the very centre of our cottages strongly influences the food culture at HammondCare’s aged care homes. Our meals are home-cooked and fresh – we strive to make HammondCare Horsley feel as much like a home as possible.

Features of HammondCare Horsley

HammondCare Horsley offers cottages designed to encourage autonomy and dignity, and are made to feel like a home. Each room has a large, private ensuite bathroom, and residents also have access to a variety of common areas allowing residents to choose where and with whom they spend their time.

HammondCare Horsley has also been built in line with best practice in dementia design, to enhance each resident’s sense of autonomy and dignity through easy to use and locate door handles, colour-coded taps for safety and all furniture placed in a direct line of sight to maximise independence.

The various common areas of the cottages include the following spaces:

  • A fully functioning domestic kitchen
  • An open plan lounge and dining area
  • A parlour with a fold-out bed which family members can use if they wish
  • Two sunrooms containing lounge chairs and small tables, providing a common space that also allows a degree of privacy
  • A TV room with a variety of lounge chairs, a coffee table, a TV with a DVD player, along with a stereo system
  • A backyard containing barbecues, small pergolas, benches and tables, raised garden beds and washing lines - all back yards are secure, and looping garden paths link the outdoors with the indoors, minimising confusion for residents
