Finding a niche and empowering team members through learning

When HammondCare team member Helen applied for a consultant position, her resume caught the attention of HammondCare’s Learning team - and her broad knowledge of the aged care, disability, and health sectors.

Now, 5 years on, as Education Consultant, Helen is instrumental in shaping HammondCare’s learning programs. Her role also gives her the opportunity to travel to deliver the programs – something that is important to her.

Helen hasn’t looked back, as she continues to create flexible ways to empower staff through the gift of learning.

The opportunity to create my role Helen_careers post Sept

From the moment I started with HammondCare, I was struck by how valued my new team made me feel, being offered a seat at the table to become part of the decision making.

When I approached my manager about conducting mental health modules for staff, we started with the team at HammondCare’s Braeside Hospital. The response was very positive, and these learnings have now been crafted into my portfolio as a permanent offering.

No two days are the same

In my role I train teams across HammondCare – home care, residential, and health and enabling teams. I really like how my work can be so different, week to week. We try to get out to all our locations regularly; I’m not just Sydney based.

I also provide support to a number of HammondCare’s teams and committees on various projects, which expand my view of the organisation and builds on my professional experience.

Valuing the whole person

HammondCare has shown me that people are respected and valued as unique individuals, and a healthy quality of life is encouraged.

The travel may not suit everyone, but it really suits me. Recently when I was in Queensland presenting to the home care team, I was able to catch up with a friend for dinner as well. It’s great to have that added flexibility when I travel.

HammondCare's heart

I have seen the ‘heart’ of HammondCare at work, and I continue to be inspired by it. I’ve not experienced this anywhere else. When I deliver training at HammondCare Darlinghurst, our first care home for people at risk of homelessness, I am reminded firsthand of how we value everyone regardless of their circumstances, and how we are collectively trying to improve quality of life for people in need.

Finding my niche

I want to support our teams in the best way I can, so they are fully equipped to do their jobs.

I’ve been pleasantly surprised about the opportunities that have come my way, which has been indicative of HammondCare’s flexible approach.

I have definitely found my niche at HammondCare.
