Light the way this Christmas
While many of us are celebrating with family and friends, sadly around one in five older Australians face isolation this Christmas,1 separated from loved ones because of frail age, serious illness or financial hardship. Loneliness can lead to significant health complications, including a shorter life span and poor mental and physical health.2
Your support enables a wide range of initiatives that enhance and individualise care for people with complex health needs. You visibly bring smiles to the faces of patients, home care clients and residents.
Bringing joy and dignity to those in need
Christmas can be a particularly distressing time for those experiencing or at risk of homelessness. Often estranged from loved ones and disconnected from their communities, many experience feelings of hopelessness and depression.
For many years Stephen* had no permanent address. He called Sydney’s rail network his home, finding refuge amongst commuters. ‘I always hated Christmas. It was the ultimate reminder that I was alone and without family.’
Now, the incredible team at HammondCare Darlinghurst go the extra mile to ensure every Christmas is a special time for Stephen and 41 other residents who have found their forever home there.
Dedicated Darlinghurst Volunteer Coordinator Shirley said, ‘It’s never too late in life to enjoy the sheer delight of Christmas lunch or opening a gift. Last year, one resident cried tears of gratitude when she received a gift “I cannot believe it!” she said. Stephen, who suffered years of social isolation due to his homelessness, said, “The food is so good. It really does feel like Christmas”.
‘We’re all like family here,’ Shirley said. ‘We hope our residents feel they are part of something truly special. They deserve it.’
Your donations will provide dignity and connection for frail-aged people with complex needs and who have experienced homelessness.
