Jim's Story

A safe place to call home

8 years ago, Jim was just like anyone else – a middle-aged Dad with a happy home and 2 kids. Then a tragic car accident sent his life spiralling out of control.

The accident left Jim with a brain injury that cost him his job. Jim’s marriage crumbled under the financial strain and he lost his family. Due to his age and injuries, Jim couldn’t find another job, his savings ran out, and after a lifetime of hard work, he found himself homeless.

Desperately lonely and struggling with crippling depression, Jim was haunted by the shame of his situation.

"I felt so ashamed. I couldn't bear to ask for help. I couldn't even look at myself," says Jim.

Whether because of the brain injury, his depression or the exposure of living homeless, Jim could no longer keep track of the time of day. He often missed opportunities to eat and shower because he can't remember when or where to go. His poor personal hygiene has led to serious infections in open wounds that he has no way to keep clean or dressed.

The streets was no place for a frail older man. Jim urgently needed medical care and a safe, warm place to sleep. But above all, he longed for the chance to regain his dignity, so he can hold his head up again.

“I dream of having a home again - of being able to hold my head up and have people look me in the eye and talk to me again.”
