Peter lived a full and rewarding life as a dedicated professional and devoted family man. He had a deep love of nature and wildlife, inspired by animal documentaries.
He had longed to explore the world, but as for many of his generation, international travel was a luxury that was beyond reach.
In stepped the Dreams Program.
Peter's original Dream was to join his daughter and son-in-law on a safari in Kenya. Sadly, the long journey was beyond what his health would allow.
Instead, the team creates a special Roar and Snore experience at Taronga Zoo, complete with exclusive behind-the-scenes encounters, bringing a little piece of Africa to Sydney.
The visit was timed to match Peter's daughters safari in Kenya. Peter's wife Gina spoke with great joy about the moment Peter was video-calling his daughter while feeding giraffes , as she stood among vast herds of zebras on the Kenyan plains. Despite being separated by thousands of kilometres, they were able to share a remarkable and deeply meaningful experience together.
The team at the zoo was incredibly supportive, providing a room overlooking the koala enclosure. Peter had exclusive behind-the-scene access and the opportunity to interact with and feed a variety of animals.
He barely slept during his stay, keen to observe what his new neighbours were doing after dark. Gina laughed as she recalled Peter occasionally channelling Sir David Attenborough, providing insightful commentary on the behaviour and nightly activities of the koalas.
She shared that his health seemed to improve almost magically over those 48 hours. ""It was as though he had taken a magic pill and was suddenly free of his condition," she said.
It is a memory she says will stay with her forever. Peter was the happiest she had seen him in the long and challenging years since his diagnosis.
Gina also reflected that "Peter never stopped talking about his Taronga Zoo experience" until he peacefully passed away some time after his Dream was fulfilled.
For Peter, this Dream was far more than a visit to the zoo. It allowed him to reconnect with a lifelong passion, share a unique experience with his family, and create joyful memories at a time when illness had imposed so many limitations.
The Dreams program exists to provide moments like these for people receiving palliative care, helping them focus on what remains possible rather than what has been lost. By creating meaningful experiences that celebrate identity, relationships and personal aspirations, Dreams can bring comfort, joy and a renewed sense of purpose to patients and their loved ones, while creating cherished memories that endure long after the Dream itself has ended.
