On 11 November, as we remembered the sacrifice of those who served their country with a minute’s silence, we also acknowledged the particular significance of Remembrance Day for older people in the HammondCare community.
Across our care homes, residents, families, and teams came together to share in activities and personal memories. Chapel services provided opportunities to hear heart-warming messages, hymns, prayers, and poems for those who served and lost their lives.
At HammondCare Caulfield, resident war veterans laid a wreath outside Dane Cottage. For this ceremony, and their service, we thank Bob—an aviation serviceman who fought at Vietnam, and Gail—a member of the Women’s Australian Air Force.
Dane cottage is named in honour of returned soldier Dr Paul Dane, who served in Egypt and Gallipoli in World War I. Dane believed returned soldiers should live as full a life as possible and was the first psychoanalyst in Australia to establish group therapy to treat ex-soldiers.
We will always remember them.
Lest we forget.
