Meet Bhuwan (pictured above with team member Jason), Residential Manager at HammondCare Horsley, just 90 minutes south of Sydney. Originally from Nepal, Bhuwan grew up in an extended family, where his close relationship with his grandparents inspired him to follow a career that supports older people.
He moved to Australia to provide more opportunities for his wife and two children, and says he’s humbled by the compassionate care he’s witnessed at Horsley after joining the team there just over a year ago.
Starting a new life
My younger brother had been living here for a year before I decided to follow him, in 2008. He told me what a great place Australia is for raising a family.
Two years later, my family joined me, and we began a new chapter of our life together. My children also started school soon after they arrived. I was excited for them to have a good education and make new friends.
Valuable lessons
Caring for my grandparents back in Nepal taught me patience, respect and the value of being fully present. I would sit with them and listen to their stories; we shared everyday tasks together. It was a special time of bonding for me.
In my 18 years of living in Australia, I’ve had the pleasure of working in regional aged care homes and hospitals. This period has helped me understand more about dementia, and how trust is such an important aspect of care.
My team
In 2023 our French bulldog Lulu joined my family. She’s now the newest member of the Horsley team!
She likes coming to work with me, and we visit the cottages together. The residents’ eyes light up when they see her, and they love to give her a pat. Lulu’s a very social dog and enjoys the attention. It’s a joy to be a part of that.
I’m proud of my team and how they treat each resident with the dignity and respect they deserve, just like a relative. It’s a privilege to support them. For families and loved ones, moving into residential care can a big adjustment. I’m here to support them in any way I can, too.
