Former cruise ship entertainer and Liberace impersonator Bob brings joy to clients at River Oak Social Club, Erina.
HammondCare At Home client Bob really missed travelling the world, delighting thousands of people with his voice.
When Bob’s GP noticed he was feeling low and seemed withdrawn he advised him to consider making a few lifestyle changes – to think about the things that brought him joy.
This conversation was shared with Care Manager Vanessa who made some inquiries about sourcing a saxophone for Bob. Care Worker Paul is a regular visitor to Bob’s home who also knew clients in the community who attended the River Oak Social Club. So, he arranged for him to perform there, something he thought he might enjoy, after so long away from the stage.
Social club members not only enjoy Bob’s live performances, they also regularly participate in a range of social activities tailored to their interests, from art making to sports or even an outing in the local community. What clients most enjoy is forming continuing connections with others in a welcoming environment.
River Oak Social Club Manager Stacey shares: “Bob really gets the clients going, joining in the chorus, performing songs from their past, evoking precious memories. A favourite is ‘When You’re Smiling,’ which is really appropriate, as Bob beams when he sings – it’s a genuine expression of achievement and joy. Now Bob is also playing regularly at the local RSL. The audience love him there, too!”
We encourage you to reflect on what brings you joy and a sense of personal achievement. We invite you to speak with your Care Worker or Care Manager about how we can support you to connect with others by joining a local social club using your existing Commonwealth Home Support Programme funding.
