A new Charter of Aged Care Rights will take effect from 1 July 2019

The Government is introducing a new Charter of Aged Care Rights that takes effect from 1 July 2019. These rights will apply to anyone receiving Government-subsidised aged care services in Australia.

To learn about the Charter watch our video explaining the new Charter and read the useful questions and answers on this page.

1. What is the new Charter of Aged Care Rights?

The new Charter of Aged Care Rights specifies the rights and responsibilities of anyone receiving Government-subsidised aged care services in Australia. It enables residents, clients, representatives and aged care providers to share an understanding of the rights and responsibilities of people receiving and providing care, helping everyone to work together towards a safe and high quality aged care system.

2. What is the purpose of the new Charter?

The Government has identified that there is considerable duplication and potential confusion between existing aged care charters for residential care, home care and restorative care. As a result, a new single Charter of Aged Care Rights has been developed.

3. What is HammondCare’s perspective on these rights?

HammondCare takes the rights of every person in our care very seriously. Our mission in action, which has been in place for many years, has always championed the rights of the people we serve, and the way we provide our care. We fully support this new Charter of Aged Care Rights.

4. What are the rights in the new Charter?

You can view the new Charter of Aged Care Rights here. If you require the Charter of Aged Care Rights translated into a different language you can find them on the Government website.

5.What are the responsibilities that come with these rights for those receiving care?

With these new rights also come responsibilities for those receiving care. These responsibilities are:

  • Respect: Treat others with respect
  • Safe environment: Respect the rights of staff to work in a safe environment
  • Information: Assist your provider by giving relevant information
  • Fees: If you have agreed fees, pay these on time.

6. What do I need to do?

If you are already receiving care services from HammondCare, we will send you a copy of the new Charter of Aged Care Rights and a letter containing the key details. You will also see that HammondCare has signed the new Charter.

The Government is encouraging you to sign the Charter too. You are not obliged to do so, but if you would like to sign and return a copy, a reply paid envelope will be enclosed for you to do so.

If you are you are becoming a new client of HammondCare, we will provide you with a copy of the new Charter of Aged Care Rights with your application pack for you to review and sign.

7. When will all this happen?

The new Charter comes into effect from 1 July 2019. We are providing it to everyone receiving our care services. We will also be informing people in our care about the new Charter directly when the opportunities arise.
