HammondCare Wahroonga, a dementia specific facility for 57 residents, has won the NSW award for Best Aged Care building in the Master Builders Association awards held on Saturday night.

hammondcare wahroonga wins awardThe four storey building, which was officially opened in February by the Federal Minister for Aged Care and Indigenous Health, Ken Wyatt MP, incorporates HammondCare’s model of village like clusters of cottages into a multi-level facility that has not compromised quality of life for the residents.

Acting General Manager of Property and Capital Works, Seamus van der Westhuizen, said the building was the outcome of a collaborative approach among the architects, Jackson Teece, the builders, and award winners, Stephen Edwards Constructions and the HammondCare capital works team.

“The result is a building that has been designed with access to outdoors via terraces and balconies, lots of natural light and an easy-to-navigate design,” he said.

“It incorporates the latest elements in dementia care design, with ensuites, clearly visible toilets in resident’s rooms, memory boxes next to the doors, and the décor is plain but warm.

“Stephen Edwards Construction highly deserve their win for best aged care building.”

This is the second recent win for HammondCare with its Miranda independent living estate receiving the MBA NSW and National Housing Excellence award for Lifestyle Living for Over 55s at the end of 2016.

Mathew Edwards from Stephen Edwards said they had forged an excellent working relationship with HammondCare to deliver a truly remarkable facility, whilst maintaining continuity of care services within the palliative care ward of the adjacent hospital.

“HammondCare Wahroonga will be an exceptional facility for residents and their families for many years to come,” he said.

Mr Edwards added that the win was the company’s 17th at the Master Builders Associations construction awards.
