Minister announces funding for older people with mental health needs

NSW Minister for Mental Health, Pru Goward and Member for Holsworthy, Melanie Gibbons, visited Hammondville yesterday (Wed 7 Dec) to announce an additional $1.4 million for specialist older person community mental health services across south west Sydney.

Minister Goward said the funding would allow a better spread of services for people in the Liverpool area and help keep older people remain living at home for longer.

“It is greatly important for families living in the community, that services like these are available. Linden is a very powerful unit that deals with the complexities of dementia,” Minister Goward said.

Ms Gibbons said the increase in funding for specialist mental health services for older people would allow the Government to better support the acute mental health needs of older persons across the region.

“This will see more specialist psychiatrists, nurses and allied health professionals in our community with expertise in mental health,” Ms Gibbons said.

“These clinicians will allow more people to live well in the community, promote improved community mental health care and support for older people.”

The funding will mean an additional 13 fulltime equivalent clinicians in the area.
