Australian scholarship winner attends St Christopher’s Academy

For Australian palliative care nurse, Janelle Sanderson, the opportunity to attend St Christopher’s Academy on a fully funded scholarship presents a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity. St Christopher’s Academy course is held twice a year at the hospice’s Education Centre in Sydenham, South East London.

“The hospice has an international reputation for pioneering, innovative end of life care and I will be sharing what I learn with my colleagues back in Australia,” Janelle says.

“In particular I am interested in learning more about how St Christopher’s staff address the supportive, emotional, psychological, spiritual and social needs of the patient, their partners, children, friends and carers.

“They are incredibly successful in engaging the support of the local and broader community and in sharing their vision of improved access to end of life care for everybody.”

Liz Bryan, St Christopher’s Director of Education and Training, comments: “Janelle has been a very positive member of our Academy course, bringing with her a wealth of experience in supporting people with dementia across Australia.

“St Christopher’s Academy seeks to enable professionals from across the world to share their experiences and understanding of end of life care issues, and many of those who attend are from resource poor countries.”

Janelle is the recipient of The Barbara Jamieson UK Palliative Care Nursing Scholarship, managed by leading aged care services charity, HammondCare, which operates three palliative care hospitals in Sydney.

Apart from attending St Christopher’s Academy, which focuses on empowering and equipping participants to improve the delivery of holistic palliative care in their own communities, Janelle will spend several more weeks in the UK shadowing senior hospice staff.
