Leading aged care provider, HammondCare today released an Environmental Position Statement (EPS) which outlines plan to achieve a 10% reduction in energy and waste by 2022.

Chief Executive, HammondCare, Dr Stephen Judd said environmental sustainability makes good financial sense: “This is a strategic approach which will measure our environmental footprint and actively builds awareness across all areas of our operations,” Dr Judd said.

“Our organisational goals are realistic and achievable. Being wise with resources and reducing waste is consistent with our mission and promotes ongoing financial sustainability by reducing costs, meeting the expectations of our customers and minimising risk.”

The EPS goals by 2022 highlight 10% reductions in:

  • Energy, gas and water consumption

  • Landfill waste

  • Motor vehicle running costs and emissions

  • Administrative related consumables

The EPS also identifies focus areas including an asset renewal program, new staff training and awareness initiatives and the use of sustainable design principles in refurbishments and new developments.

“We have already taken a number of steps to reduce our environmental impact like the installation of solar panels, the adoption of ozone technology in laundries and the upgrade to LED lighting across our homes and offices,” Dr Judd said.

“Our ongoing “Be Waste Wise” program has delivered significant savings on our electricity spend across the organisation of around a third between 2012 to 2015.”

Other successful initiatives introduced over the past few years include:

  • the introduction of an Energy Management System (EMS) in 2013 that measures electricity consumption and manages mechanical plant from a single database. Electricity savings of between 10-15% were achieved at most sites in the first full year of operation

  • the introduction of ComCare in 2015 to help streamline logistics, which has resulted in savings of around $815,000

  • a move towards a paperless office in some areas including email statements for HammondCare At Home clients, expected to deliver savings of $40,000 next year

Dr Judd said while environmental initiatives introduced so far have delivered some good results, more could be done.

“We are committed to deliver a broader more coordinated approach, looking at ways to further reduce our carbon footprint and actively seeking to be greener across all areas of our business,” Dr Judd said.

He said regular monitoring and reporting was the key to successful implementation of environmental initiatives as well as staff engagement.
